How to Use Duck Decoys
By Greg Garner of Hen Killers
Duck decoys are known for being used as very important equipment in duck hunting. They are usually made at home or purchased from hunting stores. From the past centuries up to the present, using duck decoys became more and more popular. Their purpose is important enough that hunting activities will be a failure without them. There are many things to remember on how to use these remarkable tools. In fact, experienced hunters create a certain strategic plan first with the decoys to make their hunting successful. Everyone should understand that it is not just about tossing and placing the duck decoys in the hunting area and let the decoy do its job. It takes a lot of knowledge to use them wisely. The first thing to do is to make a choice if you will make your own decoys or just buy in a store instead. Upon making or purchasing, be sure that they are made from the right materials that will also depend on what breed of ducks you will hunt. Original duck decoys are usually made from wood, but materials like plastic, foam and cork are now also used. After the materials, the number of the decoys comes next. For example, if you are hunting in a stream or creek, smaller number of duck decoys are advisable; and if you are in a larger area like lake, make use of larger number. This effect will make the environment natural for the real ducks. Although duck decoys are very useful to bring during with your hunting activities, then they should be light enough to carry around. Remember that you need strength and stamina for the whole day of hunting, and you wouldn’t want to waste all that for just carrying heavy decoys. Ducks are smarter than people thought they are. Another important thing to remember in using duck decoys is not to use the same set throughout the year. This is a common error especially for first time hunters. By doing such action, the behaviors of ducks in this particular hunting area are greatly affected. If you don’t have any idea on what kind of decoys to use next, you can always ask experienced hunters to help you out. In addition, lessen the number of your decoys as you hunt throughout the year. Ducks can remember how it all looked like and how many decoys were used from your last visit. Since duck decoys come in different materials, one thing you have to be sure of is that they shouldn’t be gleaming. If the real ducks noticed the difference between them, they are likely to fly and move away from your direction. For a greater effect, make your decoys move while on the water from time to time. You can do this by attaching a piece of string to each one of them and yank it. Or you can also make them feathery to look more realistic – it will also make them move in windy days.
